Prices come from each registrar's public price list and exclude taxes, ICANN fees shown at checkout, and premium names. Registrars change prices often; the checkout is always the final word.

How to choose a domain extension

Start with .com. It is the extension people assume, the one email autocomplete suggests, and the one that never needs explaining. If the .com is available at the normal price, take it, even if you also want another extension.

Match the extension to the audience. A local business serving one country does well with that country's code, which tells search engines where its customers are. A developer tool can use .dev, .io or .sh without anyone blinking. A personal site works on .me. What matters is that your visitors find the name natural.

Read the renewal column, not just the first year. In this table, .info, .xyz, .tech, .site, .online, .store, .shop, .pro, .tools, .blog, .art, .cloud, .studio, .design, .space, .live, .world, .fun, .club, .one, .agency, .digital, .email, .news, .academy, .guru, .games renew at three times their first-year price or more. A domain you build a business on is a cost you pay every year, and switching domains later means redirects, lost links and confused customers.

Check the rules. Some country codes require local presence, and .app, .dev and .page only work over HTTPS because their registry put them on the browsers' HSTS preload list. Neither is a problem if you know in advance.

Mind the reputation. A few cheap extensions are heavily used for spam, and some email filters and corporate firewalls treat them with suspicion. For a business that sends email, the small saving is rarely worth it.

Where these prices come from

We read the public price lists of the registrars we track each time the site is rebuilt and keep the registration, renewal and transfer price of every extension they sell. The table shows the lowest of each column, which can come from different registrars: the cheapest place to register is not always the cheapest place to renew. When you search a name, the Compare button on every result shows the full list for that extension. RipeLinks is not a registrar and is not paid to rank anyone higher.

Frequently asked questions

How many domain extensions are there?

About 1,500 top-level domains exist in the root zone, run by hundreds of registries. Our price data covers 1,120 that the registrars we track actually sell; the table above lists the ones people ask about most.

Is .com still the best extension?

For most businesses, yes, mainly because people type .com by habit and trust it. When the .com you want is taken or overpriced, a relevant newer extension is fine for search engines, which treat all generic extensions equally. Country codes are the exception: Google uses them as a signal that a site targets that country, except for a short list it treats as generic, such as .io, .co, .me and .tv.

Why do renewal prices differ so much from the first year?

The first year is marketing. Registries and registrars discount it to win registrations, then charge the regular price at renewal. For some new extensions the regular price is five to ten times the promotional one. Over five years, renewals are almost all of what you pay.

Can anyone register any extension?

Generic extensions are open to everyone. Many country codes have rules: .us needs a US connection, .eu and .fr an address in the European Union or EEA, .ca a Canadian presence, .com.au an Australian business number and .jp a Japanese address. Some new extensions such as .bank or .pharmacy are restricted to verified organisations.

What is a domain hack?

A name that reads as one word across the dot, like bit.ly, del.icio.us or orchard.tools. Our domain search suggests hacks automatically when the end of your name matches an extension we have prices for.
